Tests, Tests and more Tests

What a busy week it has been for both the girls. Haley had an especially busy past couple of days. She had some tests and exams done. She had an upper GI and small bowel follow through yesterday. It didn't show any obstructions or strictures like the other test showed. We are happy about this and are so glad they did this test to make sure. Her bowel surgery is still scheduled for Thursday December 17. She also had the more in depth hearing test today and it showed she has mild hearing loss. We talked to the doctor who said that most likely she has a little fluid in her ears due to being in a horizontal position since birth. We feel that her ears will clear up and she won't have any hearing loss. She had a follow up eye exam also today. Her right eye is doing ok and starting to look better. Her left eye still is not so good. There isn't any more surgery they can do to fix it. We are so grateful though that her right eye is ok. We pray that she will be able to see well enough out of that right eye to see the beauties of the world. Haley had a head ultrasound as well which showed no changes. To top it all off, she also got her immunizations today. Haley has been through a lot the past couple of days, but she handled all the tests well. She is such a trooper though she was worn out. When we visited her this evening, she was sound asleep. Rachel is just hanging out. The big news with her is that she is now 6 pounds 2 oz!!! She has finally made it to 6 pounds. We are so excited. We know that the more she grows the sooner she will be able to get off the cpap and not have to get a trach. I forgot to mention that Rachel had her follow up eye exam on Tuesday and her eyes are doing well. No problems there. Rachel should be getting her hearing test soon.

Rachel wide awake. She's waving hello to everyone.

Haley fast asleep after a busy day of tests.

  4. My daughter was so happy to see the photos of the girls today!! I'm glad to hear that everything isn't as serious as it first seemed. I hope they are able to keep Haley's surgery for the 17th, I'm sure it will be a relief once all her intestine issues handled. Little Rachel is 6lbs!!! That's fantastic news! I really hope she's able to grow stronger on her own, without the need for more surgery. Thank you, as always, for sharing your family with us :)

    Praying for you always,

  5. Although we love to think that the babies are waving at us, it is actually a sign of being stressed when preemies do that with their hands. God knows that these babies have been stressed enough. Hopefully the path they continue on will be less stressful and more relaxing.

  7. Thank you for sharing the great news! Haley will soon have her bowels reconnected and be one step closer to going home. I imagine there is not much more progress needed for her to go home. Rachel reached 6 pounds! That’s so good! : ) The pictures are so pretty! I never heard of babies waving when they are stressed… Rachel knew I was going to see this picture. She is waving at me! I love you little angels! You are constantly in my prayers and in my heart

  8. In defense of bridal shower, finger splaying, saluting, waving--whatever term you use IS a studied and recognized sign of stress in these babies.
Other things babies do to let us know they are stressed are apnea, bradycardia, yawning, sneezing, rapid heartrate, increased respirations, being overly irritable, decreased activity etc etc etc
Often times when a nures, pt or parent knows their babies cues they can pick up on any of these signs and put the baby back to bed to rest/recover or sometimes it's as simple as decreasing the noise and light levels in their enviornment. not always easy to do which is why i'm a big fan of private rooms in the NICu.

  12. I hope and pray that Rachel and Haley can go home soon and get to relax all day long. I never knew that finger splaying was a sign of stress, I recall my infants doing this as well.

  13. Yeah, I have to agree with Bridal Shower. She is not waving - she is a premature 4 month old, so obviously she doesn't know how to wave. It might look cute - but by the shocked look on her face and the splayed hand - she is startled. But this is not abnormal for a baby of her prematurity.

I look at these girls and wonder how Michelle Duggar's baby is going to do - she was born at 25 weeks and is 1 lb 6 oz. Bigger than these girls were, but I can imagine that she will face the same challenges. It is amazing, really, how much medical science can do for these little ones!
