Trying times

Another day down with the girls. Thomas received a call late this morning from Dr. Finkowski-Rivera who is taking care of the girls this week. She said that little Ashlyn has had a blood culture come back positive for Yeast Pneumonia, which is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. She said they have had an infectious disease doctor from Texas Children's Hospital over to see her, and that they have put her on yet another antibiotic and an anti fungi drug. Also the doctors called Thomas again around 3pm stating they needed to put an emergency PICC line in. Dr. Bloss was able to put it in successfully. When we left the hospital this evening, Ashlyn seemed to be doing a little better. The problem with the drug they are giving her for this specific type of pneumonia is that the medication is pretty hard on the kidneys and her kidney numbers are already elevated. The doctors didn't really have a choice but to give her the medication. They will be monitoring her very closely. They said time will tell what happens to the kidneys. Rachel and Haley have both had a relatively good day. They have increased the breast milk feeds for both of them and they are tolerating it well. Our biggest concern/worry is Ashlyn and all that the poor thing has gone through. Like we have said in the past, it's in the Lord's hands and all we can do is pray for her and hope for the best. We are trying hard to stay strong through all this, but it's been really hard as we have been going through these ups and downs for 5 weeks now. I feel strongly that when one door closes another one opens. That is how a loving Heavenly Father works. He is so loving and will do what is best for the girls and for Thomas and I. I know He will continue to help us through, there is no way we could make it without a kind and loving father in heaven.

  1. You dont know me but somehow I ran across your blog. I think of you daily and check your blog daily and pray for your little girls, I am so so sorry for the loss of your sons. I am saying a special prayer today for Ashlynn and the other babies as well. May your boys be up in Heaven with my daughter Macey 5/29/04-9/05/94. Lots of hugs to you, hang in there, I am sure you are so so drained with the rollercoasters of the NICU.

  4. I have been thinking of the both of you all day long- I guess sort of in a constant prayer vigil, just praying for the health, strength and healing of your three girls. You have already been through so much. Your faith, strength and resolve is truly amazing to me. You really are phenomenal people. I loved the pictures you posted in front of the isolettes last week, it really was touching. My friend Krissy reads your blog and her Isaac was born at 25 weeks and he was in the NICU for 5 months- lots of ups and downs- and he is just fine. She is a major inspriation to me also.

I just want you to know how your story has touched me and that my family in Virginia is praying for you and especially for Miss Ashlyn.

  6. Over the last few weeks ago our Ella has had brain bleeds, PDA surgery, multiple infections including one that put her in isolation, ROP, ventilation and several blood transfustions. Today she infection free, PDA free, barely needing any respitory support and being put into a crib rather than an isolete. I tell you this to give you hope that even when things are looking really scary, there is still hope that the rollerocoaster will go back up again. I think of you often and hope your girls continue to improve everyday and that you and Thomas find strength and joy in their little faces each and every day.

  8. Amanda and Thomas, I am praying a lot for all of you and specially for little Ashlyn. The emotional rollercoaster you have been going through is very hard. I immagine you are emotionally exhausted and ready for some stability (that's how I felt when I went through that 20 years ago). Your strength and faith continue to amaze me and touch people's hearts. Let's continue to pray, and take one day at a time. Both of you and the three precious girls are in my heart. Lots of prayers going your way.
