Birthday with the girls

For my birthday today, we went out to dinner and then spent the rest of the evening with the girls. We do this everyday and so my birthday was nothing out of the ordinary. I had a good day though and really appreciate all who wished me a happy birthday. The NICU roller coaster ride continues. We had some really good days in a row the past week or so and I am so grateful for them. Today was a downward dip on the roller coaster. We found out today why Haley has not gone poop lately and why her abdomen has become distended. The doctor did a test on her today. She was given barium through her tube and then had a series of x rays to follow the barium through her GI tract. The 3rd x-ray taken showed the barium slowing down and backing up and showed a possible obstruction. We don't know for sure yet, but within the next day or two we should know for sure as they continue to take more x-rays to follow the barium all the way through the GI tract. We are hoping she is not obstructed and require surgery. Of course Haley will no longer get breast milk until things are moving in her gut again. Rachel had an x-ray of her bowels as well and the doctor was less concerned about her gut so she has not had the barium test. She still has not gone poop so still not sure why not. Ashlyn is still improving and still going pee well. She still has some extra fluid on her. We were hoping that a lot of that fluid would have come off by now with her peeing well, but it just seems that it's going to take more time. Ashlyn has not been getting breast milk for a while now so there is no concern with her gut at this point. The girls had their 2nd eye exam today and still no ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). They will be checked again in another week. We are so grateful for the good eye exams. So the roller coaster ride continues, but we are going to keep holding on strong.

My birthday cake that my parents got me over the weekend. The 3 pink butterflies represent the 3 girls. I love these cakes. I get one every birthday.

  2. Glad your birthday was so good! I love those cookie cakes too! The girls are so cute, I am so glad you are able to hold them now. Praying for clear eye tests for the future and praying that the bowel obstruction does not need surgery!

  3. I was sorry to hear about Haley's possible bowel obstruction. My micropreemie twins both had this problem, were temporarily given ostomy bags, and are now healthy 3-year-olds. Your family continues to be in my prayers. Oh, and with respect to the freezer, I hope you bought a big one! My husband bought the smaller of two sizes we were considering and we ended up having to buy TWO storage freezers, which I nearly filled with those little bottles of breastmilk! I wish you the best on that front, too.

  4. Happy belated birthday!

One option on the breast milk front is if you have an insane amount you could check your NICU about donating some for the other preemies. If your NICU can't or won't use it they should be able to point you to one that can. When my daughter was born she refused the breast so long I finally had to start pumping so she wouldn't starve to death. The hospital kept her until she started gaining weight because she was so small (bigger then your girls) and had lost to much weight. Five days later they sent me home with a breast pump. I had a LOT of milk. If it wasn't for us being overseas at the time I would have donated my extra milk. My daughter wouldn't take it frozen so I was pumping, give her a little, then dumping. =(

  5. Amanda, I'm happy you had a good birthday. The cake is so cute, I love the butterflies! Don't worry too much about the girls bowels, it is not that difficult to correct this type of problem. It's not a bump in the road, maybe just a tiny rock. The girls are in good hands. Rachel, Haley, and Ashlyn are getting ready to go home, and these are common problems that preemies go through before they are ready. I continue to pray for your family, and I am sure all is moving in the right direction. Love, Claudia

  9. Happy Birthday! Regarding Ashlyn, it took a long time for Johnathan to slim back down after being so bloated, in fact he didn't really shed it all, he just kind of grew in to it. Will be praying for no obstructions for Haley, we had a NEC scare with Mady and she had a drain placed but thankfully it never drained, she was very distended for a long time but finally came around and now eats like a champ!
